Packing for a full day out in Los Angeles might seem simple — sunshine, warm weather, casual city. And mostly that's right. But there are a few things worth knowing that'll make your day significantly more comfortable. Here's the LA in a Day Tours guide to what to wear and bring.
The Golden Rule: Layers
This is the single most important piece of advice. LA mornings — especially near the coast — can be surprisingly cool and overcast, particularly from May through August (the "June Gloom" effect). By midday, temperatures typically climb to a comfortable 70–80°F. By the beach in the afternoon, there's often a cool ocean breeze.
The solution: a light layer you can tie around your waist. A hoodie, light jacket, or long-sleeve shirt worn in the morning and removed by midday is the classic LA move.
Shoes — The Most Important Choice
You will walk more than you think. Hollywood Walk of Fame, Venice Beach, Santa Monica Pier, Rodeo Drive — each stop involves meaningful walking on varied surfaces (pavement, sand, boardwalk). Our strong recommendation:
- ✅ Comfortable trainers/sneakers with support
- ✅ Well-broken-in walking shoes
- ❌ New shoes (blisters guaranteed)
- ❌ High heels (pavement, stairs, sand)
- ❌ Flip flops (fine for beach, but uncomfortable for a full day)
What to Bring
- Sunglasses — essential year-round in LA. The sun reflects off buildings and pavement intensely
- Sunscreen — even on cloudy days, UV levels in Southern California are high
- Camera or phone, fully charged — you'll take more photos than expected. Bring a portable battery pack if you're a heavy shooter
- Spending money for lunch — budget $15–30 per person at the Farmers Market
- Light backpack or day bag — hands-free is much more comfortable when walking and photographing
- Water bottle — we provide complimentary bottled water, but a reusable bottle to refill is always handy
- Comfortable hat — optional but useful for direct sun exposure
What to Leave at the Hotel
- Large rolling suitcases or heavy bags — the tour bus has limited storage
- Valuables you don't need — only bring what you're comfortable carrying in public
- Formal attire — LA is casual. Even Rodeo Drive doesn't require dressing up
Seasonal Adjustments
Summer (June–August)
Light, breathable clothing. A layer for the morning marine layer. Sunscreen is non-negotiable. Expect beach areas to be cooler than inland.
Spring & Fall (March–May, September–November)
Ideal weather. Light layers. A light jacket for mornings and evenings. Sunglasses always.
Winter (December–February)
LA winters are mild but real. A proper jacket for mornings (it can drop to 50°F/10°C). Temperatures warm to a pleasant 65–70°F by midday. Rain is possible — a compact umbrella or packable rain jacket is worth having.
💡 Pro tip: Wear your most comfortable outfit. This is a day of exploring — comfort always beats style on a tour day. Save the fashion moment for dinner.
